Tuition Policy
- Tuition is $125 per month per subject.
- There is a one-time enrollment fee of $50. For Junior KUMON students there is a one-time $50 materials fee.
- Tuition is due on or before the 25th of the previous month. For example, December's tuition is due on or before November 25th.
- A $10 late fee will be assessed if tuition is not received by the1st of the month. (For example, if December's tuition is received on December 2nd, a $10 late fee will be applied.) Tuition postmarked on or before the 1st is not late.
- A student may be absent for two consecutive months without incurring fees or being discharged. If a student returns after an absence of more than two months, a re-enrollment fee of $50 will apply.
- According to the KUMON North America policy, 'If work is received for any day during a month, tuition is due for the entire month.'
- Paid tuition is non-refundable and is forfeited should a student discontinue enrollment or if work is taken at any time during the month.
- A 30-day written notice is required before leaving the program. Your account will remain open and active until written notice is received. Your account will be closed 30 days after we receive your notice to terminate.
- In cases of medical or other emergencies when 30 days notice is impossible, please contact us -- we will do what we can to accommodate your situation.
- Our preferred form of payment is electronic funds transfer (EFT). Alternatively, you may make payments using Visa, MasterCard, cash or check.
Class Attendance
We understand that *life* happens and that you may miss a class at one time or another. If you know your child is unable to attend class, please call or email us at absent@kumonparkslope.com. The more notice we have, the better able we will be to make the necessary adjustments to your child's plan and prepare the work for you to pick up. You are also welcome to stop in during class time to pick up the work for your child to complete at home.
Class attendance is a vital part of the KUMON program. We garner a great deal of information by observing your child at work, which informs the instructional decisions made for your child. If a student misses a regularly scheduled class without contacting us in advance, the work for that class will be reassigned for the next class. Work missed due to an unexcused absence cannot be 'made up.'
Completed and corrected assignments are used to develop and modify each student's individualized lesson plan. For this reason, new assignments will not be given after the 2nd consecutive unexcused absence until the previously assigned work is completed and returned. Please be sure to notify us at least two class sessions in advance of any extended vacation in order to give us ample time to plan and organize for your child's absence. Thank you!
Incomplete Homework
We know that some days seem crazier than others. However, we are very strict about homework completion. We expect our students to come to class with all of their KUMON homework 100% complete, and with all mistakes corrected. Students who come to class with work that is incomplete must complete all of it, including corrections, at the Center before beginning the classwork for the day.
If there are extenuating circumstances that have kept your child from completing his or her work at home, please send in a note or call the Center in advance to let us know that the homework has not been done. We will reschedule the work for the day.
Corrections and Homegrading
The active supervision of daily assignments at home is linked to each child's success in the KUMON program.
Please read our detailed home grading guidelines here!
Parents play a vital role in the KUMON routine. It is crucial that parents provide a 5-10 minute block of time per subject to promptly grade the daily KUMON assignments. We ask that assignments are timed, errors are marked, and mistakes are corrected by the student before beginning new work.
All parents are expected to home-grade their child's KUMON homework. Students whose parents home-grade make faster, smoother progress through the KUMON program because:
- they correct and learn from their mistakes daily
- they make fewer mistakes overall and require less repetition
- they are more motivated because their parents are involved
- the parents know exactly what their child is doing and have a daily opportunity to help their child achieve
KUMON students are required to correct every mistake on every set they complete. Students whose parents do not home-grade spend a great deal of time in class correcting mistakes from old homework before they can begin the day’s classwork. Students are required to correct all mistakes on their daily classwork while at the Center, as well.
…But don’t worry! We provide a tutorial, Answer Books and a handy Parents Guide to Home-Grading to help you with the process.
Workload and Worksheets
It is important that the student be given the appropriate level and amount of work. Parental feedback regarding student work is always welcome -- please contact the Center the day before class to discuss any adjustments or concerns regarding your child’s KUMON study plan. An adjustment to the workload is at the discretion of the Instructor.
Students return graded homework sheets on class days. On class days, students complete work at the Center and, after grading and any necessary corrections are made, the worksheets are left at the Center. You may of course request to review your child’s completed classwork.
Communication
We value the opportunity to work with your child and recognize that communication will further your child’s success in KUMON. Feel free to call, e-mail, send in a note, or drop by the Center. Of course, class time is reserved for the students, but we would be happy to speak with you at any other time.
Please look for updates and information, which will be sent home regularly in your child’s KUMON box. Monthly newsletters and tuition envelopes will be sent home, as well as quarterly Progress reports in March, June, September and December. Please feel free to request a meeting with the Instructor at any time to discuss your child’s progress. (It is important to note that meetings will not be scheduled during class time.)
Holiday/Vacation Schedules
Planning and organizing work for your child takes a great deal of thought and organization. We require at least one class session’s notice before an extended absence in order to put together your child's vacation packet.
It's easy to let us know when you'll be gone and will need packets put together to cover your time away. You can leave a phone message, e-mail and/or send in a note letting us know the last day your child will be in class and the day s/he will return to class so that we can organize the right amount of work for your child. You can also let us know if you would like any adjustments in the workload. Please let us know if you want to lessen or even increase the amount of work to be done over your vacation. However, if a parent requests extra work or an increase to the regular daily workload while on vacation, the work must be home-graded. Extra work will not be included if home-grading has not been done in the past.
If we do not receive advance notice, we will try our best to compile a packet for you by the end of class that day. However, if we are not able to gather the work by the end of class, we will make different arrangements for pick up.
Extended Time Off
When a student who has taken a break returns to KUMON, s/he will not pick up from where he or she left off in the curriculum. Over time, the skills that students have built through daily study weaken. Thus, when a student returns to KUMON after an extended absence, the student will take another placement test and a $50 re-enrollment fee will be charged. The instructor will determine a previous point of study in the curriculum for the child to begin again.
Center Closures
Center closings are announced in advance. Center closures are noted on the website calendar, the bulletin board in the waiting room, and the monthly newsletters.
The Center follows the usual New York City Public School holiday schedule to determine spring break. The Center is also closed December 24 & 31, Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day, and Thanksgiving Day. Please check the website calendar or the bulletin board in the waiting room for specific dates that we will be closed. If the Center is to be closed, students will receive work on the last class day before the holiday to tide them over until the next class session.
Emergency closing will be announced on the website.
Achievement Test Awards
Passing an Achievement Test at the end of a level is the highest achievement a KUMON student can attain. Passing an Achievement Test indicates that a student has achieved mastery of the concepts in that level and possesses the skills necessary to handle the work in the next level.
Each student who passes an Achievement Test receives an Achievement Test Certificate, an Achievement Test summary, and a prize.
Please be sure to read the Achievement Test summary that will come home along with the Achievement Test certificate. This includes the student's score on the Achievement Test and a brief overview of the goals for the next level.
Student Incentives
As strict as we are about homework completion (please see section on 'Incomplete Homework'), we are equally committed to rewarding students for their dedication and effort.
Students are awarded stickers at each class if all of their homework has been completed neatly, graded, and recorded. Worksheets must also be returned in the order in which they were completed. Students can earn up to five stickers each week. When the stamp card requiring 40 stickers is completed, students may select a prize. Students do not receive stickers if their work is incomplete.
Through their effort and self-discipline, our students are able to earn tangible and frequent rewards for their hard work.
Termination Policy
If a student is going to drop out of class, either temporarily or indefinitely, written notice is required at least 30 days before the effective date. Your account will remain open and active until written notice is received. Your account will be closed 30 days after we receive your notice to terminate.
Paid tuition is non-refundable and is forfeited, should a student discontinue enrollment or if work is taken at any time during the month.
According to the KUMON North America policy, 'If work is received for any day during a month, tuition is due for the entire month.'
